It acts as an irreversible inhibitor of GABA transaminase, the enzyme responsible for the breakdown of GABA. By inhibiting this enzyme, (±)-Vigabatrin increases the concentration of GABA in the brain, thereby exerting its therapeutic effects. It is primarily used in the treatment of epilepsy, particularly for complex partial seizures and as an adjunctive therapy for refractory seizures. The increased GABA levels also contribute to its anxiolytic properties, making it a potential candidate for the treatment of anxiety disorders.
